The Terry Callier Music Documentary Newsletter (#2)

The iconic venue for many of Terry’s London performances

Greetings all,

As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to take this time to express our gratitude for everyone who has supported or been a part of “Freedom Song: The Terry Callier Story” thus far.  Some updates:

LONDON TRIP!

In October, we had a whirlwind week of interviews in London.  The stories each of you shared about Terry the musician and Terry the person were beautiful and evocative.  We were fortunate to speak with many of Terry’s UK collaborators, including Beth Orton, Bosco D'Oliveira, and Chris Kibble.  We did our best to recreate the vibe of Terry’s historic show at the 100 Club when we interviewed Eddie Piller, Ady Croasdell, and Jeff Horton inside the club (see photo), and we spoke with Eddie’s Acid Jazz partner Dean Rudland as well as Mr. Bongo label head, Dave Buttle.  Many thanks to everyone who supported us that week, especially Paul Miller for UK Production, Fadi Halabi, Dylan Smith, Sharon Miller, and Worth Wagers.

FUNDRAISING

Now that we have completed more than half of our target Interviews, Tim has begun work on a Rough Cut. We’ll begin fundraising efforts in earnest in the new year.  We plan to approach this in multiple ways:  we are applying for fiscal sponsorship so we can pursue grants, we will likely hold a fundraising event in Chicago in 2025, and we will launch a crowdfunding effort as well.  So please stay tuned for more on these.  If you know anyone who might be interested in supporting this project, please email Jenn & Tim directly.  Also, if there are folks we should add to the list for this newsletter, please let us know!

We remain honored to be able to work on this project - it’s a true labor of love! Terry’s soul-folk legacy deserves way more shine.  (Speaking of Soul-Folk, check out Ashawnta Jackson’s 33 1/3 Genre series book on that very topic, in which Terry is prominently featured!)  We will be in touch!
